It’s THE AWESOMEST, Auntie!

I survived a 10 year olds birthday party this past weekend.  I survived said party attended by twenty-seven 10 year olds.  There was a karaoke DJ, a face painter and a seriously loud sound system.  Those kiddos were rockin’ out! Of course, I made the much talked about guitar cake.  I started on it on Thursday with the frosting.  On Friday evening, I baked the first 2-layer sheet cake and on Saturday morning I baked the second 2-layer sheet cake.  I started on Saturday morning around 8:30 am and took a 1 1/2 hour break to venture over to Party City to pick up some balloons for the Birthday...

Guitar Cake Essentials

I’m all geared up to make the guitar cake, starting on it tomorrow, thanks to a little help from a fellow baker and blogger – Jen @ She Takes The Cake who suggested I toss the Wilton’s fondant that needed to be dyed pink and find some Satin Ice pre-dyed fondant instead.  So with a full tank of gas, I geared up to traverse the GINORMOUS city that is Houston in search of the things I will need. (PS – Houston is HUGE – you can’t take a cab (WAAAAY too expensive) / bus (only go to 85% of the areas) / train (no trains here) / subway (no subways here) / bicycle (good luck...

Stop, THIEF!

Days like today remind me how much I detest thieves. Someone stole my camera.  Not once, not twice, but three different times.  I’m beginning to lose my sense of humor regarding digi-cams.  (that’s an under statement!) I really would like to buy a new digi-cam but the paranoia of someone stealing it again has kept me from doing so for over a year.  If they weren’t so effing expensive, maybe I wouldn’t mind.  A couple hundred bux is still a wad of cash that could be better used somewhere else. BAH! And my Mother wonders why I wish the squeaky and wobbly carts on so many...

Girls Rock!

My nieces birthday is coming up and they’ve decided on a Girls Rock karaoke party. So, it looks like I’m going to make the cake.  Wheat, gluten and dairy free chocolate, and I have decided on making her a 3D pink guitar, replicating the guitar on her invitations. I’m so excited that I bought gum paste today to play around with, WOO HOO!!  This will be my very first time working with fondant. (It seems easy enough, in theory, but I’m sure it is going to be difficult.) It is a good thing I learned the secret for making the layers soft, sugar water sprayed onto the cake before...
