Guitar Cake Essentials

I’m all geared up to make the guitar cake, starting on it tomorrow, thanks to a little help from a fellow baker and blogger – Jen @ She Takes The Cake who suggested I toss the Wilton’s fondant that needed to be dyed pink and find some Satin Ice pre-dyed fondant instead.  So with a full tank of gas, I geared up to traverse the GINORMOUS city that is Houston in search of the things I will need. (PS – Houston is HUGE – you can’t take a cab (WAAAAY too expensive) / bus (only go to 85% of the areas) / train (no trains here) / subway (no subways here) / bicycle (good luck on the freeway, Lance Armstrong..)

My first stop was Candylicious, an adorable little candy shop where one can find anything their sweet tooth desires by way of candy.  Here, I picked up some black licorice wheels for the guitar strings, some black gum drops for the guitar knobs and some black M&Ms for the inlays between the frets.

My next stop was Whole Foods, an amazing grocery store that specializes in organic, natural and healthy food, household and hygiene products.  Here I picked up some organic, gluten free chocolate cake mixes (as a newbie to the gluten-free and dairy-free realm, I figured it best to go with a mix rather than goof it up until I get the know-how needed), some gluten-free, organic vanilla extract, organic semi-sweet chocolate, gluten- free and dairy-free shortening and some kosher salt.  All the ingredients for the cake and frosting.

These two were fairly close to each other (actually only a few blocks) but were more than 30 miles from my house, and I was still in Houston!  So my next trek was back to my side of town to visit a local cakery and cake supplier, S & J Cake and Candy Supply.  Here, I picked up some Satin Ice and some CK Products luster dust.  Woo hoo!

I was so tired when I got home that I ate some lunch and then proceeded to take a 3 hour nap.  Woah!

I am going to start the cake tomorrow afternoon so that it will be completed by Friday evening.  That way if I need anything else, I can pick it up / make it on Saturday morning, in plenty of time for delivery.

Gooooo, Baketastic!

Be Sweet,

Heather
