This weekends project was a 3-tiered wedding style baby shower cake that turned out to be only 2-tiered. 3 tiers was just too much cake. Like the cupcake party, I used a basic vanilla butter recipe and swirled in an amazing chocolate recipe (using sour creme for extra moist texture and a tad of instant coffee to give the chocolate a little kick). The frosting started off as a basic buttercream (unsalted butter with confectioners sugar) but I added some heavy whipping cream for a better texture which made it even easier to spread. The stars are made of fondant, of course and the miniatures on top are made of non-toxic, food safe clay (purchased from JoAnns Fabrics and Crafts – hand made and baked in my kitchen – except for the two tiny bears which were compliments of Clayinaround at Etsy.com). I altered a Deco-Pac baby (baby bud) by removing it from the flower, removing the baby’s petal hat and painting the diaper and hat blue with water based acrylic paint.
Needless to say, the client (a close friend of mine) was more than satisfied, she actually said, “You far exceeded my expectations!” I was beside myself with glee. I can’t wait to see the stacked cake when she sends the updated photos because I preferred that she travel with it in separate boxes.
Be Sweet,
Heather
What a fun cake!
